Bandcamp Friday Suggestions - March
Another month has passed, that means we get another Bandcamp Friday!
If you’ve been living under a rock, since the pandemic began (and musicians were hit particularly hard by restrictions), Bandcamp has been taking the first Friday of each month and waiving their fees on all music sold that day. That means, if you purchase music from Bandcamp tomorrow (March 5th), the artists you support will get 100% of the proceeds.
Every Thursday before Bandcamp Friday, the Cups N Cakes team comes together to offer some suggestions on acts that we think you should support. Check them out below and don’t forget the plethora of other albums, EPs, and singles on our site to check out. There is undoubtedly something for anyone/everyone.

Shaun’s Pick
Straight-ahead Cowtown based rock and roll with some surprisingly heady psychedelic freak-outs and intelligent hooks. With fun and funky Ween inspired bangers that are jammy without ever reaching the stage of directionless noodling, these guys seem like a perfect act to catch at a backyard kegger.

Joel’s Pick
Pretty and chill summer-vibes indie pop with arrangement and dynamics that are crafted and delivered with care. Ryan Hockey has the quirky tones, distinct rhythms, and lyrical charm to enchant your heart a million times over.

Greg’s Pick
The debut album from Saskatoon producer and multi-instrumentalist - June Thrasher - is released this Friday. The six song synth-spectacle uses cinematic sounds that make you feel like you're living in a Stranger Things simulation. A limited run of CDs is available on bandcamp and each purchase of the physical album includes a book of the artist's photography that inspired the music on Viper Creek.

Julie’s Pick
After what felt like a long wait since their excellent (and criminally underrated, if you ask me) 2016 album Delay Our Time, Waitress are back with another full-length in Precipice, just released on March 1st. Waitress offers the best mix of dreamy and sexy-as-hell, meeting somewhere in the intersection of electro synthpop and shoegaze, while sounding like the soundtrack to a lost John Hughes movie for mature audiences.

The most vital band on the planet has offered up this gem. Sure, it was recorded by Chris in Chris' basement… sure, it's for superfans… sure… it's still better than 99 percent of recorded music released anywhere.

River Jacks where have ya been all my life? You’ve been around. I guess I’m a little late to the party. Some stellar Folk/Punk from Calgary and these rhythms are gonna getcha! 2017’s release Strange Adventures is sure to get you riled up. You get your good lyrical content of punk rock. Themes of the fantasy, time, space, politics and controversy. All better than the daily news I might add. You also get the most killer accordion! Now who said accordion wasn’t cool?

***Editor’s Note - Noreen is on vocals and keyz in The Knot No Howz, a psychedelic punk project from Bruderheim, Alberta. You can look forward to their first full length album coming out this year. They’ve had their music featured in a film shot in Edmonton called Hot Box, a party comedy you can check out on Amazon Prime.

Altered Dead are "Returned to Life" to offer 10 tracks of dirty old school death metal, riddled with catchy riffs, ghoulishly haunting vocals, and devastating drumwork. Believe it or not, all of this crushing material comes from a two piece out of Victoria, BC!
Clay’s Pick
In an exciting debut from Lethbridge folk-rock four-piece Webb, catchy pop hooks are delivered over dreamy, psychedelic guitars and twinkling, swirling synths. Wavering vocals add an endearing and familiar pop-punk vibe, while impressive and engaging drumming drive the sound forward. I can't wait to see Webb on stage again!
Jeff’s Pick
Stoppler fuses experimental with hip-hop with jazz. Winnipeg’s Kitz Willman’s four track EP (that consists of an intro, a single, an experiment, and a nine-minute long epic), is unique and refreshing. Had I known about it in 2020, I would have lobbied HARD to put it on our “Best EPs of 2020” list.
