Purple City 2026 Preview
Cups N Cakes is very excited to be rekindling our relationship with Edmonton’s Purple City Music Festival. The fest takes place this weekend (September 11th-13th) in various locations within the downtown core centred around the iconic Starlite Room. Without having to walk more than a block in any direction, the festival employs the All Saints' Anglican Cathedral, two stages within the Freemason’s Hall, two stages within Y Afterhours Club, three stages within the building that houses the Starlite Room and a large outdoor stage on the street in front of said venue. It is exactly how a great multi-venue festival should be set up. The hotel employed for the artists and the conference is also within this one block rule and this year that hotel will be fuller than ever as the festival has grown to having over 120 acts!
So, how do you navigate such an event? Which bands do we think you should see? Should you commit your hard earned money to attend?
The answer to the later is most definitely YES! One thing has become abundantly clear, Purple City is turning into a destination event. Yes, it is true that some of the headliners are playing shows in Calgary but this is a festival that Calgarians should really consider coming up to attend. Through the Purple City website, Chateau Lacombe offers an affordable rate for the weekend and you’ll be smack dab in the middle of the action.
To answer the first question, a full weekend wristband is the only way to go. Differing than other multi-venue festivals like Sled Island, every venue is so close that it makes this one of the best venue hopping fests that we know of. If you aren’t feeling what you’re seeing, simply walk a hundred meters and BAM! Whole new experience! The River City Revival in the basement of the Starlite Room is the only venue that offers food but there’s incredible options in downtown Edmonton for all types of cuisine. If you are open to walking a bit further (10 minutes), Campio Brewery offers amazing Detroit Deep Dish, Seoul Fried Chicken is a couple blocks away with Ramen Misoya right across from it and Wayback Burgers around the corner. If you’re waking up in Edmonton, venture down to Rosewood Cafe near Churchill Square for brunch. Edmonton’s downtown can be a little rough around the edges so please use find a pal to walk with at night.
Oh... but what about that bands? Talk about burying the lede…
Well with Purple City bringing in over 120 different bands, I guarantee you’ll find something you’ll like. I know at Cups N Cakes we only cover Canadian music but be sure to get out and support the international acts that are coming all the way here to play. Despite the tensions between Canada and the U.S, be sure to give a warm welcome to Shannon Shaw, Bambara, Johnny Jewel, BLXCKPUNKS, Throat Piss, Initiate, War On Women, Deerlady, Dark Chisme and more! On top of all the lovely American bands, Iguana Death Cult are coming all the way from The Netherlands and Numa Echos are flying in from Italy!
Then you’ve got the Canadian acts, our specialty.
From the long overdue return to the stage from The Wet Secrets, to the avant-crooner stylings of Calvin Love, this year’s festival has a remarkable array of up & coming acts that will blow your mind. If you’ve never seen Sunglaciers, lift the rock off your home and check them off your list. The noise-psych band Hot Garbage isn’t to be missed and same goes for the synth-punk sounds of Montreal’s Alix Fernz. Power-pop/Garage-rockers Taxi Girls are an exciting band who are gaining traction across Canada and Toronto’s Kali Horse craft grungy avant-pop with industrial flourishes and are worth checking out. Vancouver’s DOUR put out a great album of dark and brooding post-punk earlier this year while Penny & The Pits are coming to Edmonton to play tracks from their debut album that found its way on a couple different CnC Team Members Best of 2025 lists.
There’s so much to see, I’m feeling very lucky to be able to attend but if, perhaps you’re looking at the bank balance and feeling the pinch… Purple City has you covered with more free and all age shows than I’ve ever seen at a festival. There’s simply no reason to miss the Block Party shows on Saturday and Sunday while multiple others free events can be found by searching the ticket listings for shows marked FREE.
Purple City has become a staple in Edmonton, an event you circle on the calendar. Get out an enjoy an onslaught of great tunes and even better times before the winter descends on the City of Champions.
