Double Single Premiere: David Ivan Neil

B.C.’s David Ivan Neil broke out in 2019 with his exceptional album What Is Love. Neil’s idiosyncratic vocal delivery, paired with his uncanny perspective made the album one of our favourites of the year (See: Best Albums Of 2019 - Honourable Mention and: Best Tracks Of 2019 - Part II )

Today we are very happy to announce Neil’s follow-up to What Is Love will be called Simple Shapes and it is set to arrive on November 13th via Kingfisher Bluez. Cups N Cakes recently spoke with Neil to learn more:

“I wanted to give this record a more sparse sound and keep things simple. My goal was to keep all songs under the 3:30 minute mark (one or two went a little over). I have a very short attention span. some songs on ‘What Is Love’ just seem too long to me now….

….Simple Shapes refers to how I play guitar, using very simple hand shapes, usually one or two fingers and a capo. I guess I also tried to keep the themes to the songs pretty simple and straight forward. 'Keep it stupid, simple' is kinda how I like to run things.”

This album was produced by Simon Bridgefoot at Racoon Moon Studios January, 2020. Neil and Bridgefoot played all the instruments except on “I Knocked on Yer Door” and “In Yer Room, which features Becky Ninkovic (YOU SAY PARTY) to sing and Ian Fildes to play the electric guitar. Neil’s wife, Marla Sawatzky, also appears to sing on “Softer Than a Rock.”

Along with the album announcement, the Cups N Cakes Network is pleased to give you the first two singles entitled: “Sun” and “I Knocked on Yer Door”, enjoy!
