Release Premiere: Parler bien - histoires du comté d’essex

Parler bien is a duo led by Jane Chan and Nicolas Hyatt with contributions from many artists and friends. They collaborate from a distance (Chan resides in Victoria and Hyatt in Whitehorse) to make experimental chamber-pop music that explores musicality in speech. You’ll often hear spoken word passages looped within their songs.

Their debut album, histoires du comté d’essex, will arrive tomorrow but we are very excited to share an exclusive listen to the entire record one day early. Conceptually, the album focuses on the francophone dialect of Hyatt’s former home of Windsor and Essex County in southwestern Ontario.

The record aim to capture the beauty of this manner of speaking, reimagined with a chamber-pop musicality that blends the speech samples in with cello, synths, piano and drums. The theme around the speech samples deals mostly with what it’s like to live as francophones in this region - the isolation from other francophones, the influence of english and other languages, and the beauty of shared words and experiences.

Enjoy histoires du comté d’essex below and pre-order the album digitally or on vinyl (limited to 100 copies).
