Bandcamp Friday Suggestions - May

Another month has passed, that means we get another Bandcamp Friday!

If you’ve been living under a rock, since the pandemic began (and musicians were hit particularly hard by restrictions), Bandcamp has been taking the first Friday of each month and waiving their fees on all music sold that day. That means, if you purchase music from Bandcamp tomorrow (May 5th), the artists you support will get 100% of the proceeds.

Every Thursday before Bandcamp Friday, the Cups N Cakes team comes together to offer some suggestions on acts that we think you should support. Check them out below and don’t forget the plethora of other albums, EPs, and singles on our site to check out. There is undoubtedly something for anyone/everyone.

If you’re financially able to support musicians tomorrow, please do.

Jeff’s Pick

Hamilton's Matt Ellis rips through 18 tracks in under 25 minutes on this break-neck album that can be found blaring from the audio system of a car wreck on the corner of Ramones Boulevard and Jay Reatard Way.

Justin’s Pick

Vancouver's newest hardcore outfit, Incision, come out swinging with their first, self titled EP. Explosive riffs, electric panic chords, obliterating drums, and Connors pissed off vocals all equal out to one extremely punishing release, and this is only the beginning for the young band!

Noreen’s Pick

When life needs some excitement just add Edmonton’s Swill City Daggers. They brought the beer to the party so be ready to shotgun one with the boys and dig this deadly drunk rock punk rock!

(*Note From Editor - Noreen’s band The Knot No Howz recently released the first single from their upcoming debut. Check it out!)

Simone’s Pick

Lodia Mija's debut single with Backxwash is something else. Josh Eastman from Helm Studios did the production on this track, and it is just such a strong grimy, dark song where Lodia's vocals are cutting as hell and Backxwash just swings by to drop some signature vocal lines to baptize this new artist.

(*Note From Editor - Tormorrow, Simone will release the debut album for her pseudo-antigone project. We highly recommend you purchase it on Bandcamp Friday)

Mo’s Pick

Joe Vicker's album Waiting on a Muse, is earnest and honest and beautiful. It surprises you around every corner with rollicking foot-stompers and serenading country-folk ballads. Exclusive to vinyl lovers at the moment. Like the songs themselves, there's something pure and true about hearing an album in it's entirety for the first time via a physical, hold in your hands record. Do yourself a favour and grab yourself a copy. Trust me, this one's a classic.

No embed available. This early opportunity is only for vinyl purchase. Go here.

Shaun’s Pick

Word is there's a new single and an upcoming full length from these guys on the near horizon. Psychedelic power pop plus a 90's country aesthetic from one of the songwriters behind Calgary psych faves Devonian Gardens. Just in case you ever wanted to know what Clint Black dropping acid would sound like.

(*Note From Editor - Shaun’s latest features electro-acoustic improvisations based on random cards drawn from the Rider tarot deck.)

Brandon’s Pick

Here's an oldie but goodie. For you fans of hard rock reminiscent of grunge and sprinkled with heavy metal influence. Xiphias from Edmonton, Alberta will bring you back to the days of your misspent youth with their six song demo chalk full of catchy tracks recorded between the years of ye' old 2012 - 2015.

Clay’s Pick

Winnipegs JayWood locks into a groove and doesn't let it go in his new EP Some Days. Taking Indie pop and blending with psychedelia and funk/r&b sensibilities scattered throughout, he gives us familiar tones and turns up the bop. These handful of songs leave us just enough of a taste to make us crave more. JayWood is one to watch!
