Video Premiere: The Garrys - Get Thee to a Nunnery

It’s no secret that the Cups N Cakes Network loves The Garrys. We’ve been swooning over their doom-wop, psych-surf stylings for years. See: Pick Of The Week (2020), Vinyl Unveil (2018), Inside The Artists Studio (2018). We are even lucky enough to have Julie (one of the three Maier sisters) as a regular contributor to our “Pick Of The Week” column.

This makes us all the more tickled to be able to premiere the video for the title track from their highly anticipated new album, Get Thee To A Nunnery. The Amery Sandford animated video follows three young catholic school girls who head out on the town to smoke cigarettes and catch The Garrys live in concert before (with the help of divine intervention) getting back to the nunnery before curfew.

Cups N Cakes reached out to Julie Maier for more insight into the video:

“When discussing the video concept with Amery, we gave her just a handful of ideas to get started, and she really understood the story of snotty teenage fun and mischievous Catholic schoolgirls we were trying to tell. We used the TV show 'Derry Girls' as a bit of a common reference point. The prank that the girls pull in the video by slipping a chocolate bar into the Virgin Mary's hands is based on a story that our mom shared with us. We also pretty much begged Amery to animate our dream by making us look like we were performing on the set of a 1960s variety show, and she nailed that vibe while paying visual homage to Danceland, one of our all-time favourite venues. Amery really latched onto the concept and ran with it, and brought it to life as something so adorably cool. We feel really fortunate that she could work with us on this!”

Get Thee To A Nunnery arrives on September 24th via Grey records. Pre-order on vinyl, CD, cassette, or digitally here.
