Premiere: Dirty Dev & PHILY - Rumpus Room

Four years after Edmonton underground hip-hop duo Dirty Dev and PHlLY dropped their first mixtape Antimasque, the two are finally gearing it for its follow up. A fixture in Edmonton’s underground hip-hop scene the duo met at a party in 2017, shortly after PHILY had moved to the City of Champions. PHILY’s unorthodox mashups of instrumental ambient and dance music proved the perfect backdrop for Dirty Dev’s chilled-out lyrical delivery.

Their new release is a three song EP set to arrive on March 3rd. It’s called, Dirty Dev and Phil’s Inevitable Return to the Bullshit, and it’s meant to me exactly what its title suggests. The duo are dipping their toes back in the water and discovering the subtle differences in their city’s music scene, post-pandemic. Equal parts cynical and silly, this tape also marks the beginning of their attempt to carve out a more meaningful place for their music within their hometown and beyond.

The song we are premiering today is called “Rumpus Room,” named after the chapter of Burough’s Naked Lunch that made Dev put the book down. This song is about what you can find in a mid-size prairie town arts scene if you’re paying attention.
