Premiere: The Fledge - “Southern Farms”
Back in 2022 a band from Hamilton Ontario called The Fledge exploded onto our radar with an electrifying EP of post-hardcore meets post-rock meets progressive-metal. We quickly fell in love with this release (called Hunter) and it found itself on our Best EPs (*or Mini Albums) Of 2022 while the track "Harm & Correction" made our list of the Best Tracks Of 2022. Fast-forward four years and The Fledge have announced that their debut album, Gatherer, will arrive on October 9th, 2026 through zBTFD Records, a newish label with a rapidly growing roster of bands spanning genres and sharing worldviews.
While Hunter was an exercise in introspection, Gatherer opens the front door and peers out into this chaotic world to explore themes of aging and anxiety, the housing crisis, unfettered capitalism, and the daily grind that seems designed to keep us obedient. Sonically, the band continues to explore tense and gripping moments akin to post-rock that explode in ferociously loud rock as the vocals soar out of the mix.
Cups N Cakes is extremely excited to deliver an exclusive premiere of Gatherer's lead single, “Southern Farms.” I’d have to expect the band wrote this track before the U.S. turned from a friend to a nasty bully, making Adrian Murchison (vocals/guitars/keys) somewhat precognizant. The band explains via their website:
“Southern Farms muses about the idea of American exceptionalism through the voyeuristic lens of Canadian experience. Peeking across the border from our own glass houses, Southern Farms offers commentary on the US military industrial complex, American entertainment, and the folly of a political system rooted in herd mentality. Equal parts observation and warning, Southern Farms suggests that we don't get too comfortable with the elephant sleeping just outside our doors.”
