Video Premiere: Bad Buddy - "QB"

It’s just about the best sign of things to come that within the first 30 seconds of the new single from Edmonton’s Bad Buddy, I’ve already caught an enormous grin sneaking it’s way onto my face. The band has just about as good of a claim as anyone to being the best band in the city, and the release of “Q.B.” marks their welcome return after 2020’s incredible self-titled debut (and a dare-I-say underappreciated single from 2021, “Mind Control”). “Q.B.” is the first single from their upcoming album, which, while formally unannounced, will be hitting the shelves in June of this year.

As always, the band excels at finding where the political and personal intersect, and diving headfirst into it with a fearsome intensity and an unmatched sense of humour. “Q.B.” is also the first release from the band that is co-written by guitarists Emily Bachynski and Andi Vissia, with the latter performing the lead vocal on this outing. “I feel like I had an idea for this music video years ago – way before the song had presented itself to me,” says Andi Vissia. “One of my experiences as a woman in this industry is having people think I’m there because of a man, or just having people underestimate my experience and credibility.” The song and video (directed by Emily Bachynski) work in tandem to illustrate this idea in ways that are both poignant and funny. It’s a paean to recognizing the power and skills that you possess, and not letting other people devalue that, and my God, it’s catchy as hell to boot.

The upcoming record was produced by Bachynski and Thierry Diab, engineered by Scott Franchuk, and mixed by Diab. “Q.B".” will be released everywhere on Friday, March 29th, and if you haven’t had the chance to see Bad Buddy live, you’re in luck: they’re playing in Edmonton tonight at 9910 as the final show in the Together YEG concert series.
