EP Premiere: Kaiya Kodie - when the lights have all gone out

The Cups N Cakes Network is pleased to premiere the debut EP from Edmonton indie-folk singer-songwriter Kaiya Kodie. “when the lights have all gone out” was recorded at Edmonton’s Riverdale Recorders by producer Harry Gregg, and features a veritable cornucopia of Edmonton’s finest session players, from Gregg himself on the bass to Edmonton legend Dave Babcock playing the clarinet on the first track. The EP is out on all streaming platforms today, and Kodie is celebrating with a release show tonight (September 28th, 2023) in Edmonton at The Aviary, supported by Amanda Penner and Sydney Williams.

The 4 song EP runs the gamut from the dark, chamber folk of album opener “Idiosyncrasies”, to the beautiful and poignant lyricism of “Lonely People”. The latter is one of the stand out tracks on the EP, albeit one of the more straightforward ones; it is a perfectly produced folk number, and Kodie’s voice, along with the mandolin and Hammond organ, create a lush soundscape against one of the best written lyrics on the EP. I don’t know that I’ve heard a line that feels more prescient in 2023 than the tag at the end of the chorus: “We’re all just lonely people, doing boring things for cash”.

Well, there is nothing boring about what Kaiya Kodie is doing on this EP; “when the lights have all gone out” is an excellent debut from a songwriter sure to cement her place in Edmonton’s burgeoning indie folk scene. The EP is out now, and you can see Kaiya perform it live at The Aviary in Edmonton tonight.
