Video premiere: Sunglaciers - Cursed

Today, Calgary’s Sunglaciers are announcing their long awaited third LP Regular Nature, due out on March 29th via the excellent Mothland. The announcement comes with the first single and music video from the forthcoming album, for the song “Cursed”. We recently featured the band on our “Most Anticipated of 2024” list, with Cups N Cakes founder Jeff MacCallum saying that “Sunglaciers have moved away from being one of the more exciting bands in Calgary to one of the more exciting bands in the country”.

The video, shot and edited by lead singer Evan Resnik, has a surreal, dreamlike quality, with the shots of the upside down black and white landscapes calling to mind early silent horror films as much as the work of Canadian surrealist Guy Maddin. There’s a focus on textures, whether it’s in swirling, tape delayed synthesizers or the monochrome footage of the Badlands, suffused with film grain. “Cursed”, by the band’s own admission, is “probably Sunglaciers’ biggest downer to date”; it’s about regret and acceptance, but there’s a sort of passive melancholy, a sort of resignation at watching the world continue to turn and time continue to pass.

The 15 track (!!!) album arrives on March 29th, 2024 via one of the Cups N Cakes Network’s favourite Canadian labels, Montreal’s Mothland. You can preorder it via Bandcamp here.
