Video Premiere: “Toil” - Will Powers
Sudbury art punk band Will Powers announced their upcoming album Snake-Skinned today, and the Cups N Cakes Network is pleased to share a first look at the record. The first single “Toil” is out now, along with it’s accompanying music video. It picks up from where the band left off with their last release, two 2020 EPs called Burning Hands and Same (released on the same day, Nov 12, 2020). The full album is set for release on June 20th, 2025, and builds on the sound of those two EPs while throwing in some curveballs along the way.
The music video for “Toil” sees lead singer Oli Palkovits navigating the Northern Ontario wilderness, and was shot by fellow band member Jonathan Danyliw. The song itself serves as a propulsive accompaniment to Palkovits’ expedition through the sleet and snow; there’s more 16th note snare drum fills than you can shake a stick at, and a few surprising production choices (a phased out drum fill, followed by a hard cut around the 1:30 mark is particularly righteous) help give the track an unpredictability that bodes well for the rest of the album. The sudden shift in the last minute of the song hints at deeper conceptual ambitions than the two EPs the band currently has on the market, and we’re thrilled to see where it takes them.
