Premiere: Wax Duplex - Decently Lit

Cups N Cakes is pleased to be celebrating the release of Decently Lit by Wax Duplex, one of Edmonton’s best punk bands, or indeed, best bands of any genre. The album was mostly. recorded in the Fall of 2022, in the midst of a lineup change; Wax Duplex’s drummer left the band amicably during the recording, and bassist Cian Homeniuk decided to make the switch from bass to drums, leaving the band as a duo for a period of a few months. They have since recruited a bassist, and you can see Wax Duplex in their fully formed trio lineup tonight, Augusts 18th, at Blakbar in Edmonton, along with Vomb, The Dial Ups (Calgary), and Stadium 11.

Album opener “Black Sabbath” serves as a dash of melodic punk to open up the record, switching between half-time sections soaked in fuzz bass, to the double-time middle sections with the thrashy, high energy, punk that Wax Duplex are known for. The song is followed up alternatingly with short bursts of raw energy (“9 Days”, “Grasshopper”), and more classic songwriting reminiscent of the Clash. It’s an excellent album from start to finish, for lovers of the loud, and for those who just love a really damn good song.

Wax Duplex plays tonight, Augusts 18th, at Blakbar in Edmonton to celebrate the release of the album. They are one of the best live bands in Edmonton, and are not to be missed.
