New Age Doom ft H.R. - Angels Against Angels

We Are Busy Bodies

Released on March 6th, 2026

For those who are fans of the ambient and the abstract along with the heavy and the socially conscious, look no further than the most recent release by New Age Doom, featuring the vocals of H.R., lead singer of Bad Brains.

Angels Against Angels is one hell of a trip. It’s opening track, the two-part “Life on the Other Side” begins with a fried vocal delivery and the chugging of electric guitars. At first you may think you’re in for a typical metal record, but as the song evolves it displays an unorthodox coherence that carries throughout the rest of the album.

Now, it’s not all about distortion - the third track “Radio On” takes a more typical experimental approach, taking a moment to calm down. Although H.R.’s vocals retain its uneasy vibe, the instrumental mellows out, feeling almost like a dream made of fragments - an exploration into memory and nostalgia.

New Age Doom is a supergroup that has an ever changing lineup which currently includes members of Death Grips, Bowie BLACKSTAR, Quicksand, and Pussy Riot. There are also several individual artists who are included in the album, such as Tim Lefebvre, Dan Rosenboom, Gavin Templeton, Benedicte Pierleoni, DJ CrookOne, and Cola Wars. If you’re a fan of any one these groups or artists, you will find this album refreshing yet familiar.

This album primarily explores the harder sides of New Age Doom, with each member of its ensemble serving to add their own instrument to its evolving sound. From trumpets and saxophones to turntables and violins, this album is truly an eclectic blend of musical inspiration, creating a sound of its own which is truly difficult to pinpoint.

As for the lyrical content, H.R. speaks of love, equality, and mercy, with many of the albums themes revolving around life, death, and existential crises. This is accentuated by the sound of the album, which feels like a wholehearted gut punch against the unforgiving and wicked ways of the world. Through its experimental sound the band is able to push a message of survival and spirit which only reminds us of the fragility of life.

Despite the ensemble of musicians who make up the album, New Age Doom is primarily a duo of Greg Valou and Eric J. Breitenbach. They are multi-media artists who have created art that can be musical, visual, and even edible. Their desire to travel across the artistic spectrum is only aided by the eclectic musicians who join them, creating a unique blend of funk, metal, reggae, with a few dabs of hip-hop.

Having a bakers dozen of artists work together to create a work of art may be seen as “too many cooks” for some people, but for me it creates something that we have truly never heard before. With complete disregard of appealing to mainstream audiences, Angels Against Angels manages to create an album that can be both easy listening and an intense musical experience.
