blosum - Amaryllis

Self-released

Released on January 30th, 2026

Blosum, hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, breeds math-gaze precision with experimental,  noise driven post-rock sensibilities. Amaryllis is a delicate balance of subtlety and boldness; gently weaving through soft interludes and dynamic shifts, daringly reinforcing and exploring the edges of their sonic identity, the album unravels tender sentiments on loss, grief, endings and understanding new beginnings. Occupying that lingering space between feeling innately intimate yet forever distant is where Blosum operates, in a metaphorical purgatory leaving you with an aching feeling of transience.

Amaryllis mystifies, drawing you in with a dense emotional atmosphere, lush immersive passages punctuated by candid acoustic reveals. Instrumentation really drives that contrast: layered guitars shift between clean, shimmering lines and heavier more experimental distortion, while the backline stays restrained, solidifying hypnotic grooves and anchoring the pandemonium. Tenuous ambient textures fill the negative space without overcrowding it.

While much of the album divulges into beautiful, noisy chaos (which I am all for), a few tracks stand out in their restraint, subtly exposing the underbelly that the distorted upper layers obscure. These serve as interludes, feeling like glimpses of another time and place that seems eerily familiar, lingering briefly before dissolving back into the turbulent soundscape.

In its heart, Amaryllis feels like a remedy for unresolved heartbreak; a letter to a former lover, an old friend, somebody you wished was still there but isn’t. It’s an ode to reflection, not concerned with resolution but more with a quiet acceptance. Rather than building toward a definitive climax, it lingers in the in between, allowing emotions to stretch and settle without resolve. The sense of incompleteness portrayed in both the sense of the lo-fi, DIY recording style and lyrical themes of the album work in the band’s favour as it reinforces the themes of loss, change, and the uneasy clarity that can come with both. Overall, Blosum is a very exciting band that should definitely be on your radar and definitely definitely be in your wishlists (for just $9 cad on bandcamp  ¬‿¬).

Some of my standout tracks are: “untitled”, “erwinia (soft rot)", “nothingswrong”, and “milk’s lullaby”.
