Trevor Sloan is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and collage artist from Toronto who has released six albums since the early 2010’s. His latest album, Sparrows Sing While Leaves Decay, plays like a coming-of-age soundtrack to a lost film from the 1960’s. With a restrained vocal delivery reminiscent of Nick Drake or Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian fame, Sloan's soft voice sits perfectly atop elegant acoustic guitar strums, dreamy synths, ethereal lead guitar and a perfectly pulsing rhythm section. Sloan seems to draw inspiration from the best ’60s folk-pop bands but with a contemporary indie flair. Like the individual pieces that comprise his collage art, each instrument on the album can be appreciated on its own, but together they coalesce into a breathtaking work.
Recently, I was walking my dog in a “new” thrifted sweater and the smell of the season, coupled with the unfamiliar aroma of my pre-worn garment, transported me to a familiar place. A place of youth and innocence, where I had my first kiss and the fresh air mingled with the smell of a girlfriend’s hair. Sloan captures this place beautifully throughout the album. There is a nostalgia present throughout these songs, a pining. The lyrics are deeply affecting and bring forth memory fragments of lost loves.
As “Cup of Sunlight” hits my ears, with its cheery guitars and shuffling rhythm, and “young lovers reach for each other” at summer’s end, I am tempted to catalogue the album as a summer record. "Graffiti on the Dam” perfectly captures the listless meandering of youth as Sloan sings:
“Walking down a path through the forest. Wary of the darkness before us. Graffiti on the dam. A place to waste around in my hometown”
As the songs continue to unfold, with the winter chill of “I’ll Build a Fire” and the season changes of “Fragments,” the album begins to feel like more of a fall affair. One moment, I’m “build[ing] a fire to warm your bones” and the next I’m taking in a cup of sunlight near branches heavy with pink blossoms. The songwriting and musicianship on display capture something dichotomously personal and universal. On the one hand, the lost world of juvenile exploration with all the bumps and bruises we earn as we traverse life’s journey. On the other hand are memories that may be uniquely yours but with feelings attached to them that have been experienced by everyone. Sloan sums up this sentiment in “Fragments” with the lines:
“Seasons turn, lessons learned in the chapters of a life. Lost years, smiles and tears in the fragments of a mind”
Sparrows Sing While Leaves Decay is written for all seasons. It’s an album celebrating the new life of spring and summer while also lamenting loss and all that will pass in fall and winter. It’s reflecting on the good and the bad of everything we will love and lose over a lifetime. Sloan’s poetic sentiments, captivating songwriting and delicate voice hold our hand through these changing seasons and life lessons as summer ends and the leaves begin to fall. He is the sparrow singing while the leaves decay.
