Sled Island Edition Part 2

We are getting very excited about the quickly approaching Sled Island Music Festival. Cups N Cakes has been partnering with this amazing festival for many years and like always, the CnC Team will be in Calgary to take in as many shows as possible. Leading up to the festival you will see some special coverage on the site that will be highlighting a ton of the acts playing this year. That coverage continues today with a special edition of the Quick Picks that focuses on four new releases from acts playing in Calgary from June 17th-22nd. Time to start getting pumped!

Never Plenty - Self Titled

Vancouver’s Never Plenty play heavy and groovy garage rock suffused with a double blotter dose of the best kind of psychedelia: the kind where beaded doorways, blue lava lamps, barely formed moustaches, and the ever present “medicine jar” swirl in kaleidoscopic harmony and leave you melted on Terry Pepper’s mom’s shag carpet. Catch Never Plenty Saturday the 21st at the Palomino.

Carter Felker - Loser

Calgary’s Carter Felker opens Loser on the floor of the apartment, dry mouthed, a deadly headache and a weary realization that he is in desperate need of a lifestyle change. From this point, Felker stumbles from one challenge to the next (showering, shaving, making breakfast, jogging), in an estranged stupor. Loser is vulnerable but not self loathing. Rather there is an acceptance in the follies, an awkward rekindling of one’s senses that work to shed the skin off the “loser” in a real nice way. Carter Felker and his band will be playing The Ship & Anchor on Wednesday the 18th.

Avalon Tassonyi - Annette Street

On Annette Street, Toronto’s Avalon Tassonyi makes piano driven ballads out of nostalgic and bittersweet moments: one last glance over their shoulder, one last drag of the shared cigarette, one last inhale of a partner’s golden yellow hair, one last chuckle at the cosmic plight of the world. Tassonyi tips their hat, bids farewell, and boards the troubadour trolley to the next tender moment. Avalon Tassonyi will be playing at Dandy on Thursday the 19th.

Hermitess - Death and the Fool

Hermitess transfixes and lures the weary wanderer with her hermetic alchemy of harp and hymn, toward a final resting place upon a matronly bosom. Follow the knell, the gentle siren awaits there to welcome you to the next realm with a soft exhale, a fitting finale for a knight errant’s chivalries. Catch Hermitess at The Central United Church on Wednesday the 18th.
