Poison Suckers, shirehead, Standard Issue Pleasure Model, and Screaming at Traffic

Poison Suckers - Charmer

Gritty and raw but delivering a sound that pleases the masses, Winnipeg’s Poison Suckers have given us a four song EP that you’ll be playing on repeat over and over throughout the summer. Scrappy garage rockers bookend a trashy doo-wop track and a scuzzy country inspired tune. This is what I want, I want more of this, more please!…. Did I mention I want more?

shirehead - PROUD TO BE

Fronted by UK ex-pat Joni Butler, Montreal’s shirehead deliver enthusiastic high-fives to the post-punk revival in the UK that is currently taking the world by storm. The songs channel grimy post-punk with dance-punk moments and feature Butler delivering emotionally direct lyrics in a sing-speak style that hits in all the right ways for this genre of music.

Standard Issue Pleasure Model - Tripsitter

As a sci-fi nerd, this band had me at Standard Issue Pleasure Model. The tracks all have a very different feel; some lean towards classic guitar rock, some have dreamy pop nods, and there’s even a noise-punk jam. These are all cool but this Victoria act are at their best when they wield the powerful psych-rock chops that fit in well with the futuristic dystopian work from which they get their name.

Screaming at Traffic - Songs to Steal Copper Wire to

Winnipeg’s Screaming at Traffic have become mainstays in their prairie city. They’ve accomplished this feat not by trying to reinvent the wheel. Instead, they take sounds of punk, emo, and pop-punk and deliver them with impeccable precision. Driving percussion, wicked guitar licks and heart on sleeve lyrics delivered loudly but intelligibly make this four song EP a lovely little ditty for emo lovers.

Jeff MacCallum is our founder. He created Cups N Cakes simply because he had a love of local music. Soon the platform grew beyond the confines of his scene in Edmonton to include all of Canada.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
