MIINA, Loviet, the fencesitters, and Theo Vandenhoff
MIINA - Where the Light Goes
In this debut full-length album, MIINA’s music is a breath of fresh air in a chaotic, seemingly doomed world. Her voice and groovy beats are soulful, earthy, and invite you to take a break from doomscrolling to go bloomstrolling. The narrative of each song has a whimsical-punk style of exploring all the conflicted feelings of embracing a new chapter in your life, and feels like watching dappled light in the water.
Loviet - DEBUTANTE
Singer Natalie Lynn is inspired by singers such as Lana Del Rey and classic rock artists like Sheryl Crow and Courtney Love, and it makes sense — Lynn’s raw, gritty vocals are reminiscent of main character montages in early 2000s movies. My favourite tracks are “PLUSH” and “EXPLOSURE”, blending danceable, energetic beats with grunge aesthetics from 80s and 90s rock.
the fencesitters - Picture Day
the fencesitters’ Picture Day perfectly encapsulates the angst of incomplete desires of the teenage and young adult experience. I loved this indie rock album; it has an energetic chord progression with a mix of upbeat and explosive songs melting into nostalgic tunes with incredible vocals. The vibes are immaculate even when facing the bureaucratic hell of booking a flight.
Theo Vandenhoff - Saviour On The Spilled Blood
The pseudonymous Toronto-based Theo Vandenhoff captures an intensely romantic angst in this debut album. Blending European synth pop with goth-adjacent dreamy styles, the result is a highly cinematic, hypnotic album that is perfect to dissociate to. Think of your favourite songs at the intersection of synth pop, dream pop, and post-punk — Vandenhoff will meet you there.
