Edmonton has an ambient-electronic scene that rivals any city in this vast nation. People around Alberta’s capital have all sorts of theories for why this scene is so fertile. From the long winters, to the underestimated strangeness of the city, to the experimental labels that exist, to the promoters that never shy away from experimental performances. Perhaps it’s a combination of a couple of those things or all of them together. Either way, nobody ever seems to touch on the fact the Edmonton houses one of Canada’s best dealers of electronic/ambient/experimental wax in 124th street mainstay, Listen Records. Kris Burwash, the owner of this fine record store has been getting Edmontonians hyped on this type of music for decades and in 2017, he used his deep knowledge and love of electronic-ambient music to release his debut album as k.burwash, Moonlanding, through Edmonton’s Pseudo Laboratories. The album was an impressive debut that sold out of cassettes almost immediately, demanding a second run.

Today, the Cups N Cakes Network is overjoyed to announce k.burwash’ sophomore album will be dropping sometime in October. The album is called lotl qs and will be getting released through Edmonton label, Saw-whet Records. It varies a lot from his debut and was recorded with a whole new synth set-up. It was mixed and mastered by Joshua Stevenson (of Jackie-O Motherfucker, Magneticring, Kemialliset Ystävät) and the cover art was designed by Ian Rowley (Rhythm of Cruelty, Private Investigators, Boothman). Rowley hand-stamped each copy of the limited edition vinyl.

Vinyl and digital pre-orders begin on October 2nd. (Pssst. That’s the 1st Friday of the month so Bandcamp is waiving their fees. Set a reminder in your calendar, bookmark the Saw-whet Bandcamp page, and support Canadian music!)

Alongside the album announcement, we are pleased to present the video for the albums first single, entitled “still, when”. The video was created by Edmonton artist Parker Thiessen on a cell phone and is made up entirely of footage of the sun reflecting off puddles created by melting snow. The reflections were layered on top of each other and colourized to create the psychedelic effect.
