Premiere: Hot Garbage - Wewu

Cups N Cakes is starting 2026 of with a bang! After delivering 13 premieres in one (See our “Most Anticipated” article), we are once again showcasing brand new music from another favourite of our team.

Known for blending psych with post-punk, Toronto’s Hot Garbage have been getting more and more adventurous during their time as a band. The track we are premiering today transitions their sound into the noise-rock realm. This marks the bands first release since dropping their critically-acclaimed sophomore album, Precious Dream, in January 2024.

Again, the four-piece turned to producer Graham Walsh (Holy Fuckk) and mastering engineer James Plotkin (Khanate) to craft a song that is a natural progression from the sounds they were starting to flirt with on Precious Dream. “Wewu” is a driving cacophony of dissonance with ear grabbing guitar over a rhythm section that churns forward, dragging your mind along at a steady pace, urging you not to analyse but rather feel the vibes and get lost in the noise. Hot Garbage are taking you on a trip and you’d best not fight it, just go with the flow.

“Wewu” officially arrives everywhere tomorrow via Mothland, today you can check it out with the wild video below.

Jeff MacCallum is our founder. He created Cups N Cakes simply because he had a love of local music. Soon the platform grew beyond the confines of his scene in Edmonton to include all of Canada.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
