Video Premiere: Tommy Douglas Keenan - “Rockinghorse”

Winnipeg’s Tommy Douglas Keenan is a rising voice in Canada’s singer-songwriter/folk scene. His tunes lean into ethereal compositions that draw inspiration from 60s-70s psych-folk and the exquisite Americana/Rock chops of Jeff Tweedy. His new album, Returns to the Moon, arrived on March 12th and it was co-produced by TDK and longtime collaborator Matt Peters (Royal Canoe, Begonia). Each song features gorgeous guest vocals by Natalie Bohrn (of Slow Spirit).

Keenan describes the album as:

“a space-folk fantasy ranging from woozy romance to romping self-reproach to haunting sensuality.”

Today we are excited to premiere the video for “Rockinghorse”, a song about a deluded cowboy who sees himself as a free spirit; one who mistakes the derision of the outside world for admiration. The comedic video was directed, shot, and edited by Sarah Constible. About the video, Keenan says:

“My friend Sarah and I wanted the video to portray a sort of bizarro version of his inner life. A mock-epic hero's journey. Hacky sack seemed like a suitable pastime for such a character: a quasi-sport that is compelling and dramatic for the player, but slightly ludicrous to the observer. The cast is made up of some of my favourite people in the Winnipeg theatre community.”
