Video Premiere: Void Comp - “Passerby”

Void Comp is an Edmonton based, electronic artist who first appeared on our radar in 2023 with an impressive EP called Metropol. Since then, the solo project of artist and producer David Julé has learned how to translate his atmospheric, downtempo brand of electronic-pop into a live setting and has played two of Alberta’s most prestigious festivals in Sled Island and Purple City. During that time, Julé also chipped away at creating the tracks for his debut album which drops today on all platforms.

The record is called Passerby and it blends elements of downtempo electronica, EDM, late 90’s trip hop and alt-pop into a lush musical landscape for Julé to explore themes of introversion, self-acceptance and personal growth through discomfort. Having moved to Edmonton on a whim in 2022 from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan without any real plan, the album captures the anxiety and uncertainty Julé faced with this life altering move.

Today, to coincide with the release of Passerby, Cups N Cakes is premiering the music video for the title track. Directed by Ty Ferguson and shot entirely in real-time on 16mm film, the visual follows a lone figure drifting through Montreal's subway stations, alleyways, and streets, capturing the quiet isolation of moving through a city full of strangers. Drawing inspiration from Wong Kar-wai's 1995 cult classic Fallen Angels, the film blurs the line between observer and participant, building through fleeting encounters, missed connections, and moments that disappear as quickly as they arrive.

Watch the video below and if you enjoy Void Comp’s evocative style of electronica, please consider supporting the artist by purchasing his album on Bandcamp.

Jeff MacCallum

Jeff MacCallum is our founder. He created Cups N Cakes simply because he had a love of local music. Soon the platform grew beyond the confines of his scene in Edmonton to include all of Canada.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
