Premiere: Tim Bruce Johnson - “Shine a Light”

Tim Bruce Johnson is a singer/songwriter based out of Regina whom we’ve covered in the past. In fact, his 2024 EP, Good Boy, was mentioned in my “Best of 2024” article as one of my favourite EPs from that year. Johnson crafts his elegantly layered tunes completely on his own in his basement studio. Dreamy, alt-pop soundscapes with 60s folk influences are the backdrop for Johnson’s observations on modern life.

We are excited to premiere a brand-new song from Johnson that examines our reactions to some of the awful events we are seeing happen. He explains:

“I had just read a book I found in a pile in our garage, On Tyranny, which is essentially a series of historical lessons for surviving life under fascism. One of the main takeaways was about recognizing your allies or taking note of the like minded people around you in advance of things getting worse. This coincided with watching all the brutal state violence in Minnesota during the ICE raids. I basically tried to write my version of a rallying cry/ode to those who still give a shit about stuff even if it doesn’t necessarily impact them directly yet.”

He continues:

“When things are bad, I feel a deep appreciation for people who simply care or who just use their voice to say that something is wrong. The lyrics very directly express this sentiment.”

The song arrives everywhere today and we are excited to deliver it with the help of a music video that conveys the alienation of being surrounded by many who seem unaffected by the ongoing global catastrophes.
