Premiere: Wallgrin - “I.D.K”

Wallgrin is the project of Toronto-via-Vancouver composer, vocalist and violinist Tegan Wahlgren. Musically gifted, Wahlgren started early by playing in a Celtic fiddle group and singing in a choral ensemble. These upbringings instilled a love of harmonies and a timeless sense of melody, two mainstays in pop music. Pair that with a degree in electroacoustic music composition and you’ve got someone with an uncanny ability to create adventurous, yet timeless pop music. Today we are very excited to be premiering the single “I.D.K.”

The song arrives in the form of a self-produced video that follows a series of recorded video calls between Wahlgren and the team of scientists at the Bronze Age Feeling Institute (a fun goof as this is actually the name of the record label releasing Underworld Songbook, not an actual research institute as the video teases). As they discuss the latest findings in their study of the Underworld, we see flashes of ancient texts, 3D scans of caverns and barrows, and Facetime calls from remote islands… before it all crashes to a halt.

Wallgrin states:

“This song came out of a time of processing grief, when it felt like reality was completely unraveling. I took a trip to a tiny island off the coast of Vancouver, climbed to the very top, and just let myself reckon with death — the heaviness ran through me like a waterfall. There, I saw the ocean, the mountains, the sky, all of it swirling together with no beginning or end. I now understood how much tension I held in my need for clarity and reason… The video is all about rigorous scientific analysis until, without warning, it must be pushed aside to make way for pure feeling. It represents the moment I succumbed to Not Knowing, and learned to swim in the sea of uncertainty.”

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
