Premiere: Thresher/Watt - "Sip of the Sweetness"
Sometimes music happens in mysterious ways. Owen Sound is a very small city, population of just 20 000. Within this small community, a large group of musicians who lean into the wilder world of musical exploration found each other. Free-jazz, psych, kosmische, and avant-punk make up what you may hear when you hit play on a Thresher album. This experimental collective have managed to broadcast their off-kilter sound waves across Canada for lovers of avant-garde art to hear. Now, those sound waves are travelling farther than ever, targeting San Pedro California and the legendary bassist Mike Watt.
After sharing a stage in late 2023, and guesting on his long running internet radio show TWFPS in early 2025, Thresher and Mike Watt teamed up last year. After some long distance, back and forth, improv sessions, Beekeeper was born. Examining the threat human’s pose to ourselves and the ecosystem we rely upon, the album is a product of time which, sadly, is our new normal. While recording, record wildfires burned in California and Ontario. The sky wasn’t blue, the air was toxic, and the sounds found on Beekeeper are as urgent as an evacuation notice.
