Video premiere: Jackie K - I'm the Queen
Today marks the release of the first video by Saskatchewan based songwriter Jackie K, for “I’m the Queen”, from her debut LP She’s a Story. The song is a humorous take on royalty, and all the trappings that come with it. Written shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth, the song compares the glitz and glamour of being the monarch squirrelled away in her castle, with the charm of domesticity, backyards, and minivans. This story is told against a backdrop of groovy neo-soul, featuring all the oohs and ahs a lover of 60’s soul music could possibly want.
The video was filmed on location in one of Saskatchewan’s architectural oddities, Stone Hall Castle, a damn near perfect replica of a medieval castle in Regina, SK. The video was shot by Gavin Baird, and features Jackie K, with her husband and bass player Tom Kroczynski, decked out in full royal garb traipsing around the castle. The video emphasizes just how tongue in cheek the song is, and Jackie K’s performance really makes the sense of humour behind the lyric shine.
