Album Premiere: Crasher - Odditi Populaire

Today the Cups N Cakes Network are extremely excited to share an advance album premiere of Odditi Populaire, the sophomore record from Montreal’s Crasher. Set to drop this Friday, the electro-art-punk trio of Airick Asher Woodhead (formerly of Doldrums), video/installation artist Kai Thorpe, and print artist Tyrin Kelly return with new music for the first time since 2021s street cleaning machines of the world which was heralded by former Cups N Cakes writer Alex Bennett as: “a very solid way to spend 60 minutes of your time. I say this while acknowledging that this collection of tunes is only 20 minutes in length - you'll want to play it three times back to back.”

Named after their beloved (now defunct) art space for which these tracks were conceived, Odditi Populaire was refined live while the band played shows opening for the likes of Holy Fuck and of Montreal, as well as at infamous events held at the studio space itself. Heavy bass arrangements, uptempo acoustic and electronic drums, futuristic synths, and voice effects help deliver an impressive statement that swerves in and out of lanes that bring to mind new-wave, synth-punk, and avant-pop. Speaking about the project, Woodhead states:

“I write songs which are kind of shadowy and glam at the same time. It kind of oscillates between those two. At some point, we turned all the tempos up like crazy and so it had more of a synth punk feel to it. We are a live band, first and foremost, and a recording project, second. Many of these songs were written after coming back to the warehouse from events like Oxygen or raves in Delson. Or coming back the next day on a Sunday and jamming synthy songs, but with the techno of the night before still in the back of our minds.”
