Video Premiere: SHY FRiEND - “Never Been a Sinner”

Calgary’s SHY FRiEND have been gathering steam in Alberta from their over-the-top gigs that feature wild visuals, goofball bits, and raucous energy that is equal parts cathartic and entertaining. Frontperson Jubs (creator of SHY FRiEND) turns each live show into a sermon for the queer, pop, and punk misfits to gather enlightenment while absorbing a performance personifying absolute freedom. Alt-rock with power-pop and indie-twee make the new EP,SNAGGLETOOTH, shine and today we are very excited to help share this Calgary secret gem with the rest of Canada.

The video we are premiering is for the lead-off song from that EP. The track is called “NEVER BEEN A SINNER” and it boasts SHYFRiEND’s raw energy, wit, and unabashed feminine rage. It was “inspired by the sounds of The White Stripes and the energy of Beyoncé, specifically her fiery track ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself,’” explains frontperson Jubs. “It’s sassy, instinctual, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. The video amplifies that feeling — it’s about reclaiming the gaze and having fun with it.”

Directed by OBSINEMA, the video showcases equal parts personal power trip and playful rebellion. Check it out below and listen to the entire SNAGGLETOOTH EP here.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
