Bandcamp Day Suggestions - February

Tomorrow marks the return of Bandcamp Day!

Thanks to Bandcamp, the first Friday of every month has become a great day for independent music. It’s a day where you can show your support for Canadian music and know that the artists will get 100% of the proceeds. Yes that right!!! On the first Friday of every month, Bandcamp waives all their sales fees making so the artists whose music you purchase get every penny!

Please consider buying music tomorrow. Need some suggestions? We are happy to make some! Check out some music we think you should consider supporting. Need more suggestions? Simply browse our website… if you can’t find something you like, you probably don’t like music.

Julie’s Pick

Known for his many collaborative hip-hop projects, Eastlake is unique as a solo instrumental LP from Saskatoon-based producer Factor Chandelier. Made in the aftermath and anguish of a 2020 studio flood, it stays grounded in hip-hop while experimenting with expressive new downtempo and trip-hop sounds.

- Julie Maier

[*Note From Editor - Julie is well known across the prairies as one third of The Garrys. Get a brand new track from The Garrys when purchasing the compilation: Grey Matter 2.]

Shaun’s 1st Pick

Intricately textured electro-folk instrumental psych from Hermitess member Richard. Brilliantly heady soundscapes contrasting heavy electric guitar riffage with medieval string accompaniment.

- Shaun Lee

Shaun’s 2nd Pick

Manic glitchtronica fueled by neuroses and an absurdist sense of aesthetics. Possibly everything music deserves to be.

- Shaun Lee

[*Note From Editor - Shaun also makes modernist glam-rock psychedelia under the name ‘The Psychic Alliance’. Their 2020 release is listed as “Pay What You Can” but the Cups N Cakes Network highly recommends paying at least $10.00 for this gem]

Carla’s Pick

Loving this chill folk-country from the Yukon! An honest, authentic alternative to mainstream country.

- Carla Jayne

Holly’s Pick

Satisfying fans of his latest album, “Daughter of the Sun”, vbnd and The Soulmate Collective give a taste of what’s to come with their new album. Their first single, “Slowly Starting to Take Form”, feeds the soul with an explosion of groove.

- Holly-Anne Gilroy

Greg’s Pick

"2sides" is the first new music from Saskatoon alternative hiphop artist Alex Bent + the Emptiness since he released the Baby LP in 2019. The track begins as a piano ballad but then bounces between multiple voices and sudden genre shifts - a reflection of the extended Jan-Oct 2020 recording sessions for the song.

- Greg Torwalt

[*Note From Editor - When Greg isn’t busy writing for Cups N Cakes, he’s playing music in Too Soon Monsoon. When a global pandemic hits and he can no longer do that, he pumps out his debut solo album! Support Greg below.]

Jeff’s Pick

Ottawa artist Scree Running fuses downtempo club vibes with awe-inspiring experimental art-pop to create 12 minutes of perfection. Early candidate for best EP of the year.

- Jeff MacCallum

[*Note From Editor - This release is listed as “Pay What You Can”… the Cups N Cakes Network highly recommends paying at least $5.00 for this gem]

Noreen’s Pick

From the ashes of River Jacks we have a resurrection in sound. A band born during the pandemic to bring you some punk music that’ll make you think and give you hope. Check out this rad EP by Quit It.

- Green Noreen

[*Note From Editor - This release is listed as “Pay What You Can”… the Cups N Cakes Network highly recommends paying at least $5.00 for this gem]

Sean’s Pick

Tight, tape-soaked, songwriting that sits somewhere between Laurel Canyon and Joel Plaskett. Absolute ear-candy for anyone into late-60’s production with playful, modern lyricism.

- Sean Newton

[*Note From Editor - When Sean isn’t busy interviewing incredible Canadian acts for our ‘Inside The Artists Studio’ podcast, he’s crafting great music. Check out his 2020 EP.]
