Premiere: Sam The Living - “Thanks for Asking”

The Cups N Cakes Network is very excited to help Sam the Living, the self-proclaimed sad prince of the prairies, announce his debut EP, The Heel. Now based in Toronto, Sam is an eclectic singer-songwriter who blends seventies soft rock and contemporary indie folk. Calming, textured instrumentation are the canvass for his brooding voice which carries stories of almost-love, hunger, heartache, and absurd reflection. Pulling inspiration from mundane, everyday experiences, Sam uses these moments to examine deeper meanings and will give pause to anyone truly hearing his lyrical thoughts.

Today, we are delighted to premiere the lead single from the release, “Thanks for Asking”. This tune sets the stage for the themes running throughout the album. The cost of ambition, pursuing a career in the arts, and the resentment that comes with said pursuit are all explored throughout The Heel, a term used in wrestling to denote “the bad guy.” On the title track, Sam casts himself as the villain, “the heel,” and uses the metaphor to contemplate whether it’s fulfilling enough to simply be in the game, even if you are never the victor. It’s a gorgeous song highlighted by gently picked guitar and Sam’s ethereal voice.

Enjoy “Thanks for Asking” below and slam that “pre-order” button in the player to support Sam by purchasing The Heel in advance of its release date of May 26th.

"I did it all very DIY. Everything you see was me learning on the fly. I'm a carpenter not a musician, or a journalist, or a publicist... I'm a carpenter and a weird crazy music fan that thought he could do something fun that might benefit something I care about"

Over the years, MacCallum's commitment to elevating Canadian music earned him a spot as a Polaris Prize Juror, a WCMA Juror, a consultant for music festival curation, and a dear friend to independent music in Canada.
