Premiere: Perfect Outfit - “I Was Listening”
Ribbon Skirt have long been a favourite of the Cups N Cakes Network, and we were pleased as punch when guitarist Billy Riley announced the release of an EP of solo material under the name Perfect Outfit. The EP is called Walking Home, and the album opener “Hear the Message” came out on September 15th, in advance of the EP’s wider release on October 23rd. Today, we’re excited to premiere the second single from that EP, “I Was Listening”.
There’s a kinetic energy to the song that conjures up something almost industrial, like being trapped on the factory floor that manufactures some unknowable but oddly sinister artifact. Don’t get me wrong: it’s danceable, and there’s a groove here, but there’s some darkness hidden beneath the surface, something vaguely dystopian lurking underneath. It shares that unsettling nature with “Hear the Message”, and it’s easy to imagine the tracks as two sides of the same coin; that track about spiralling thoughts, being stuck in an inner life, while “I Was Listening” seems more preoccupied with the opposite: what do we miss in a lifetime spent watching and listening?
The two tracks together set the stage for an EP that’ll be well worth hearing, and indeed listening to. Walking Home is available to preorder now via Bandcamp, and is out everywhere you listen to music on October 23rd. You can check out “I Was Listening” below.
