Video Premiere: BETABOYS - “Alone in Paradise”
Cups N Cakes have been admirers of Calgary’s BETABOYS for a few years now; they featured in an episode of Kent’s old radio show back in 2021, and we’ve done a handful of premieres for the band in the past few years too. It’s our pleasure today to be premiering the lead single “Alone in Paradise” off of their just-announced LP Great Pretender, due out in December of this year.
The music video was shot entirely on videotape by acclaimed filmmaker Heather Saitz, and the distinctly analog texture of the video is great fit for both the neon soaked locations (Calgary’s Pin Bar and the Canyon Meadows Cinema) and indeed for the neon soaked tune. The band isn’t shy about the sound 80’s influence here, but goddamn if the anthemic, synth-driven chorus doesn’t make me feel just like the best songs of the era. It’s bright and propulsive, digestible and memorable, and we’re excited to see where the band goes with the rest of the record.
